Exploring Cultural Identity with Accent

Each semester, Accent Study Centers offer a series of intercultural learning workshops that invite students to reflect about their experience abroad, cultural self-identity and cultural values, as well as cultural adaptation, culture-specific differences, diversity and inclusion, and re-entry challenges. Some of the events organized so far this spring include:

  • Florence: Who wants to make a bella figura? – a trivia game based on Italian and Florentine culture, built from the familiar ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire?’ format; recently featured in the Accent Blog.
  • Rome: Ciao Bella! Unpacking your experience with gender and race in Italy – roundtable discussion with a local psychotherapist and Accent Rome staff examining issues of difference and diversity through a cultural lens.
  • Paris: Guest lecture with Jeanette Konrad, journalist and screenwriter, including a screening of short episodes from Karambolage, her television series that explores cultural differences between France and Germany.
  • Madrid: Teatro a la madrileña – discussion on differences between Spanish and U.S. American humor, including a group outing to Madrid’s microtheater, which showcases a rotating series of 15-minute plays each evening.
  • London: Workshop exploring the idea of cultural values, drawing examples from the U.S. and U.K., with exercises to set goals and expectations for the semester abroad.
