  • Accent is pleased to announce the award recipients of the Spring 2018 Accent Community College Scholarship, Juan Valeriano and Tatum Kula, who will be studying on the upcoming spring semester program in Rome with Santa Barbara City College. Accent offers multiple merit and need-based scholarships each term to community college students participating on Accent-supported programs offered through community colleges throughout the U.S. The Community College Scholarship program is part of Accent’s commitment to IIE’s Generation Study Abroad initiative.
  • In October, students from the University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) Contemporary Spain semester in Madrid met with leaders of Accem, a local NGO that advocates for the rights of migrants, asylum-seekers, and refugees in Spain. As part of their course – Immigration, Ethnicity and Nation in Contemporary Spain – students met with leaders of the NGO, as well as representatives from the served population. The same organization will host students this summer as part of a service learning program with Michigan State University.
  • The Accent London Study Center hosted an interactive roundtable discussion on the evening of October 30, exploring themes of culture and identity in London. What Makes a Londoner? welcomed debate from three frequent Accent London lecturers – Rania Hafez, Miriam Elia and Kelly Foster – and was chaired by professor Michael Owens.
  • Ashley Spinelli, Program Development Manager, was selected to co-chair the Diversity in Global Education First-Generation College Students & First Abroad Task Force for 2017-2018, and will lead a related session at the organization’s annual conference in Miami next April. This is her second year on the Task Force.
  • This fall, UCEAP students are taking part an intensive ten-day study of Sicily with Accent partner Syracuse Academy as part of the Mediterranean Politics, Food & Culture program in Florence and Barcelona. The group is based in Syracuse and taking advantage of study tours around the region.
