Business of the Arts

London and other cities
In this summer program, Olin Business students explore themes of arts and culture management, engaging with members of local art communities.

The university contacted Accent to develop this interdisciplinary program after the introduction of a new minor on campus, Business of the Arts. The program provides education abroad opportunities for students enrolled in this track, complementing instruction on campus.

European Perspective

This two-week seminar brings students to two European cities, to explore the uneasy relationship between business and art on a global scale. The first location is London, a global city and capital of art and culture. The second location varies every year, as students travel to one of that year’s three European Capitals of Culture. Past programs have visited Timisoara (Romania), Bad Ischl (Austria), and Nova Gorica (Slovenia).

Local Expertise

The seminar is taught by an Accent London faculty, who accompanies students in both cities. In each location, students meet with curators, artists, and representatives from cultural institutions. Visits include museums, galleries, concert halls, and theaters. Particular attention is devoted to the European Capital of Culture initiative. Student work in groups to investigate the short- and long-term impact of this initiative on the local context and present their findings to leaders from the local art and business communities.
