Spend the Summer in Rome studying photography with Accent Global Learning and the College of the Canyons. Attend courses with visiting faculty at the Accent Study Center, as well as with visits and lectures throughout Rome. Explore Roman historical and cultural sites, monuments, museums and galleries, as Rome becomes an extension of your classroom. Participants on the Summer in Rome Program live in double or triple rooms in shared student apartments. The Accent Rome Study Center provides support and guidance to students studying abroad.
Originally from Glasgow, Scotland, Professor Michael McCaffrey has been teaching at College of the Canyons since 2004. He received a BFA from Glasgow School of Art in Scotland and a Master in Fine Art from the University of Illinois after emigrating to the USA in 1991. His artwork is represented in public and private collections throughout the USA and Europe, such as the June & Francis Spiezer Collection at the Rockford Art Museum in Rockford, Ill., and Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago.
The Summer in Rome Program is open to students who are at least 18 years of age at the time of application. Program space is limited. Students should complete the online application with the $250 non-refundable first payment as soon as possible. Upon receipt of your application and first payment, College of the Canyons and Accent will provide you with additional application and enrollment forms. Applications must be received by April 22, 2026. Beyond April 22, limited enrollment is allowed when space permits.
The Summer in Rome Program is offered for transferable college credit through College of the Canyons. College of the Canyons, an accredited California Community College, will provide a transcript upon request for the coursework completed overseas. Generally courses are transferable to the University of California and California State University systems. Please verify the transferability of courses with your advisor or registrar before you apply.
ART 205: Landmarks of Art and Visual Culture (3 units)
UC:CSU 54.00 hours lecture. Introduces great works of art and visual culture, both past and present, as a means of stimulating visual, emotional, and intellectual awareness of the artistic heritage of world art.
Cultural learning is an integral part of the program. Students participate in a cultural activity series that offers free or inexpensive activities that may vary from sports events to lectures on local customs. Participants attend on-site lectures at museums and historical sites within Rome, these include:

Vatican Museum (including the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s)

Visits are chosen based on the academic curriculum and are subject to change.

Students live in double/triple rooms in shared student apartments in Rome. Student apartments include shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. Apartment buildings are co-ed with single-sex apartments and bedrooms. Housing is provided from the first day of the program (July 1, 2026).
All participants must check in at the designated arrival point on July 1, 2026 between 9am and 5pm (Note: most transatlantic flights arrive one day after their departure date). Airfare is not included in the program fee. All participants will receive a Rome transit pass.
A $46-per-unit enrollment fee must be paid to College of the Canyons at the time of registration. Nonresidents of California pay $225 per unit. Fees are set by the State of California and are subject to change. Students must provide proof of travel insurance at time of registration.
